New network focused on supporting First Nations Australians in the Development Sector

The Association of First Nations Australians in Development (AFNAD) is a network created by, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians currently engaged or interested in working in Australia’s international development sector. Founded in 2022, AFNAD is a volunteer-led, independent network, dedicated to fostering a secure environment for its First Nations members. AFNAD’s primary objectives include facilitating networking opportunities, knowledge sharing, and creating a sense of meaningful connection, cultural safety, and support for their members.

AFNAD currently has more than 30 members across 20 managing contractors, independent consultancies and Australian Government funded programs, with new members joining monthly.

AFNAD members David Poulton, Alice Tamang, Jenna Hawes and Allan Sarago-Ah Kee, with Ambassador for First Nations Peoples, Justin Mohamed (centre) at the 2023 Aus-PNG Emerging Leaders Dialogue.

The network has already been active in supporting First Nations Australians, including participating in DFAT’s Yarning Circle Seminar series, and launching AFNAD’s Indigenous mentoring program in October.

There are multiple ways you can show your support for AFNAD, including:

  • Sharing the network with your First Nations colleagues and employees
  • Establishing non-extractive pathways for engagement with First Nations development practitioners
  • Providing resources that build the capacity of AFNAD as a network whilst allowing members to maintain their independence
  • AFNAD are always open to new learning and networking opportunities for their members. If you have experience or an idea that is relevant to First Nations development professionals, reach out to AFNAD to see if this is something their members would be interested in
  • Provide sponsorship or opportunities for AFNAD members to attend industry events or gain relevant experience
